Newton may need to enter this year's draft (if he's guaranteed to be picked, even if it is round two) as there is always the possibility that once he's a year older, nobody will consider him. In their eyes a 19 year old is automatically better than a 22 year old even if the 19 year old only projects to becoming what the 22 already is in three years. Newton's case may be more due to the inherent age discrimination in the NBA. If it appears he'll fall to the second round on this draft, returning would be at worst an even move and he'll know what he'll need to show to improve his draft stock.
If there is one for this draft he has to capitalize on it. There are no guarantees that a first round selection will be waiting for Andre in future drafts. It would be serious malfeasance in DH's part if he were to do this and I imagine DH knows this better than anyone. It appears that Andre would remain here as long as his eligibility would allow if DH asked him to. What needs to be added to this equation is that striking while the iron's hot is possibly the only chance either has at the guaranteed money that comes with being a first round pick (Andre may be a slightly different case than Newton). I’m of the belief that these type of unselfish acts might be part of the answer. He could not come up with a rational explanation and if you think about it it does defy logic. Especially when comparing it to other equally or more successful programs. One of the podcasters after our getting number five was absolutely befuddled in trying to come up with an explanation as to why UConn has had the success rate they’ve had since 99. It didn’t matter to them he was barely able to walk after playing his heart out and was cramping in the NC game. Some fans were really upset by that decision. It arguably impacted that year’s results. He was an undersized four by NBA standards of the time but was tremendous playing it at UConn. JC had Freeman switch to the three the year after the first NC. There’s a hall of fame coach that did something similar to this. The respect and care that Andre and Dan have for one another runs deep. A lot of coaches would not have been so magnanimous. And yet Dan’s made the decision to put Andre first. It has a potential negative impact next year for UConn/Hurley. Hurley knows this and is doing everything he can to move Andre forward.
